Background of 504 Program
The Rehabilitation Act of 1973, a federal law passed by the United States Congress, ensures that eligible disabled students are provided with educational benefits and opportunities equal to those provided to non-disabled students.
Under this law, a student is considered disabled if he or she suffers from a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more of their major life activities, such as learning, walking, seeing, hearing, breathing, working, and performing manual tasks.
Services Provided in Jacksonville Independent School District
Once a student meets eligibility for 504 services, the district provides a variety of accommodations. These accommodations may benefit students that have been diagnosed as having medical, behavioral or academic difficulties that affect their education. Examples include the development of an individual Behavior Intervention Plan to help improve student behaviors, enrollment in the district READ program for assistance with reading difficulties, and the use of individual accommodations in the regular classroom setting. Content mastery, which is a small group tutorial-type program offered on the secondary level, is also available for students that are eligible for the program.
For more information on the services provided by the JISD 504 program, contact may be made with individual school counselors or principals.
